FedEx - Team Lead ; International Customs Clearance
Jem Sirrine is the Team Lead for the PGA/ECR team in International Customs Clearance at FedEx Logistics, based in Memphis, Tennessee. He has been with the company for nearly three years and is critical in managing the customs clearance process for high-value international shipments. His primary responsibilities include ensuring compliance with all governmental regulations, overseeing the training of new agents, troubleshooting problems as they arise, and working closely with various teams to address issues that may delay shipments. He has improved operational efficiency through leadership and ensured a smooth clearance process for FedEx’s international shipments.
Jem’s Career in Athletic Training
Jem’s professional journey began in athletic training after he graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor’s degree in athletic training. He started his career as an athletic training intern for the Cleveland Indians in Winter Haven, Florida, where he worked closely with the team to assist with rehabilitating and treating player injuries. This internship provided him with invaluable hands-on experience in sports medicine and sparked his passion for helping athletes recover from injuries.
Following his internship, Jem continued to expand his expertise in the field by becoming a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. During this time, he earned his Master of Arts in Exercise Physiology and worked with athletes to improve their strength and prevent injuries. His experience at UCF solidified his commitment to working in sports medicine and set the stage for his future roles.
In 2000, Jem took on the role of assistant athletic trainer at Winter Park High School. In this capacity, he worked closely with the head athletic trainer to provide coverage for all varsity and junior varsity sports teams. His responsibilities included performing pre-practice treatments, providing rehabilitation for athletes outside school hours, and overseeing athletic training interns. He also took on a teaching role, instructing students in Personal Health and Fitness, Weight Training, and Team Sports courses.
Jem’s career advanced when he joined Warner University in Lake Wales, Florida, as the Head Athletic Trainer. He provided athletic training services for 16 varsity sports, coordinated pre-participation physicals for all athletes, and managed the department’s budget. Additionally, he worked with orthopedic surgeons to expand the Sports Medicine team and collaborated with vendors for equipment and supplies. He also served as an adjunct faculty member, teaching courses on Athletic Training, First Aid and CPR, and Therapeutic Modalities.
Jem continued to build on his success when he joined Bond Clinic in Winter Haven, Florida, as an Athletic Trainer. During his time there, he played a pivotal role in growing the orthopedic department by establishing relationships within the community and building partnerships with local schools. He also provided athletic training services for multiple educational institutions, conducted patient intake and evaluations, and handled insurance billing for the clinic’s Physical Therapy Department.
Jem’s tenure at Southeastern University (SEU) in Lakeland, Florida, marked a significant milestone in his career. As Head Athletic Trainer at SEU, he expanded the Athletic Training Department to include a staff of eight certified athletic trainers. He was responsible for managing the department’s budget, recruiting physicians and medical professionals to support the athletic program, and ensuring the health and safety of all student-athletes. He also worked closely with architects to design new athletic training facilities and negotiated insurance policies for the department. In addition, he implemented mandatory screenings for Sickle Cell traits and cardiac abnormalities, further ensuring the well-being of athletes.
After his time at SEU, he worked as an Independent Contractor Athletic Trainer, providing services for various institutions and athletic programs in Central Florida.
Jem’s Role at FedEx Logistics
At FedEx Logistics, Jem serves as the Team Lead for the PGA/ECR team in International Customs Clearance. In this role, he ensures that all international shipments comply with governmental regulations. He leads a team responsible for high-value shipments and works to ensure that all clearance processes are completed without delay. He plays a critical role in troubleshooting issues that arise with shipments, preventing regulatory violations, and resolving Quality Assurance concerns when shipments are processed incorrectly.
Jem’s leadership has been instrumental in improving the overall efficiency of the customs clearance process. He has developed Desk-Level Procedures that serve as training tools for new agents, ensuring they are fully trained and prepared for their roles' responsibilities. He has also led training sessions for other managers and team leaders within FedEx, educating them on the regulatory requirements for government agencies. He collaborates regularly with team members at the FedEx Express hub in Memphis to identify the causes of clearance delays and implement strategies to minimize such delays.
In addition to his responsibilities with the customs clearance process, Jem provides customer service for delayed shipments and shipments missing the necessary documentation. He works directly with customers to resolve these issues promptly and efficiently. He also supervises Customer Service Agents, assisting them in their daily duties and ensuring they meet the company’s high standards for customer service.
Personal Life
Jem was born and raised in Winter Haven, Florida, and is the oldest of three siblings, with two younger twin sisters. His love for sports and athletics started early in life and led him to pursue a career in athletic training. As a child, he enjoyed hobbies such as collecting vinyl records and baseball hats, interests that allowed him to explore creative outlets beyond his athletic endeavors.
In 1999, he married his high school sweetheart. The couple has one daughter who recently married. Jem and his wife share a passion for travel and have visited 48 of the 50 U.S. states. Their faith is an integral part of their lives, and they regularly contribute to their church, supporting missionaries throughout the years.
Jem is also an avid distance runner. He has completed six half marathons and one full marathon, and recently, he has added pickleball to his fitness routine. His commitment to a healthy lifestyle reflects his dedication to personal well-being and balance.
